What is Calcium Signaling ?
Calcium ions (Ca2+) serve as a universal second messenger controlling processes from muscle contraction to gene expression. Cells maintain tight Ca2+ gradients using channels (IP3R, RyR, CRAC), pumps and buffers. Ca2+ signals are decoded by effectors like calmodulin and calcineurin. Dysregulated calcium signaling contributes to arrhythmia, neurodegeneration and cancer.
