What is Drug Metabolism (Phase II) ?
Phase II metabolism involves conjugation reactions that attach endogenous polar groups (e.g., glucuronic acid, sulfate, glutathione) to drugs or their Phase I metabolites, increasing water solubility and facilitating excretion. Key enzyme families include UGTs, SULTs, GSTs, NATs and TPMT. Polymorphisms in these enzymes can cause adverse drug reactions or therapeutic failure, making Phase II metabolism critical for drug safety evaluation.
