What is Drug Metabolism (Phase I) ?
Phase I metabolism introduces or unmasks functional groups on drugs through oxidation, reduction or hydrolysis, primarily catalyzed by CYP450 enzymes but also by flavin-containing monooxygenases and esterases. These reactions often generate metabolites for Phase II conjugation and can produce pharmacologically active or toxic intermediates, making Phase I metabolism central to drug safety and efficacy.
