| Summary |
This gene encodes a protein that was first identified in Xenopus laevis by its role in a mesoderm induction early response (MIER). The encoded protein functions as a transcriptional regulator. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encode multiple isoforms, some of which lack a C-terminal nuclear localization signal. [provided by RefSeq, May 2013]

The C16orf87 protein is a subunit of the MIER corepressor complex controlling embryonic development and cell migration.

Scientific reports
Histone modifications by histone deacetylases (HDACs) are essential for controlling chromatin structure and regulating gene expression. Functionally, HDACs act as enzymatic subunits within diverse multisubunit corepressor complexes, thereby targeting distinct sets of genes. Here, we identify C16orf87 as a previously uncharacterized functional subunit of the MIER corepressor complex that mediates HDAC1 and MIER1 protein interactions. Homozygous knockout of C16orf87 alters chromatin accessibility and reduces cell migration in human cells, and impairs embryonic development of zebrafish. Based on these findings, we propose renaming C16orf87 as HDAC Interacting Protein (HDIP) to reflect its newly revealed function.
This KO model may be useful for:
- Investigating the role of the MIER corepressor complex in embryonic development
- Studying the function of the C16orf87 protein as a subunit of the MIER complex
- Analyzing cell migration mechanisms regulated by MIER1
- Exploring transcriptional repression pathways involving MIER1
- Functional validation of MIER1 in developmental biology and cancer metastasis research
