Description
SELENOH encodes selenoprotein H, a nucleolar selenoprotein that contains a selenocysteine (Sec) residue encoded by the UGA codon. It functions as a redox sensor and transcriptional regulator, protecting cells from oxidative stress by modulating glutathione levels and mitochondrial function. SELENOH is highly expressed in the brain and is implicated in neuroprotection, immune response, and cancer.

Protein Summary
Selenoprotein H is a 14 kDa nucleolar protein containing a single selenocysteine residue. It acts as a redox-sensitive transcription factor, upregulating antioxidant genes such as glutathione S-transferase and thioredoxin reductase. SELENOH is essential for maintaining cellular redox balance and mitochondrial integrity, particularly in neuronal tissues.
