What is Xenobiotic Metabolism ?
Xenobiotic metabolism is the process by which the body modifies and eliminates foreign compounds. Phase I enzymes (CYP450s) introduce reactive groups, Phase II enzymes conjugate them, and Phase III transporters efflux them. This system protects against toxins but can produce toxic metabolites and is a major determinant of drug disposition and toxicity.
