Description

ZSCAN21 (Zinc Finger and SCAN Domain Containing 21) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a transcription factor belonging to the Krüppel C2H2-type zinc finger protein family. The protein contains a SCAN domain, which mediates homo- and hetero-oligomerization, and multiple C2H2 zinc finger motifs that facilitate DNA binding. ZSCAN21 is involved in the regulation of gene expression during development and cellular differentiation. It has been implicated in various cancers, including renal cell carcinoma, where it was identified as a tumor antigen (NY-REN-45).

Protein Summary

ZSCAN21 is a 539-amino acid protein with a molecular weight of approximately 60 kDa. It contains an N-terminal SCAN domain (residues 1-80) and four C2H2-type zinc finger motifs (residues 200-400). The SCAN domain mediates protein-protein interactions, while the zinc fingers bind specific DNA sequences to regulate transcription. The protein is predominantly nuclear and is expressed in multiple tissues, with highest levels in testis and kidney. ZSCAN21 has been implicated in cellular differentiation and cancer, particularly renal cell carcinoma.
