Description

ZCRB1 encodes a zinc finger CCHC-type RNA-binding protein that is a component of the U11/U12 di-snRNP complex, involved in the splicing of U12-type introns. The protein contains a CCHC-type zinc finger motif and an RNA recognition motif (RRM), facilitating RNA binding and spliceosome assembly. ZCRB1 is ubiquitously expressed and plays a role in pre-mRNA splicing regulation.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Retinitis pigmentosa ZCRB1 mutations may disrupt U12-dependent splicing in photoreceptor cells, leading to retinal degeneration. ClinVar; PMID: 28193612
Cancer (general) Altered ZCRB1 expression may affect splicing of cancer-related genes; somatic mutations reported in various tumors. COSMIC; PMID: 29056338

Protein Summary

ZCRB1 is a 31 kDa protein component of the U11/U12 di-snRNP complex. It contains a CCHC-type zinc finger domain and an RNA recognition motif (RRM), enabling specific binding to U12-type intron RNA. The protein localizes to the nucleus and is essential for the accurate splicing of a subset of pre-mRNAs. Mutations in ZCRB1 are associated with retinitis pigmentosa, and altered expression is observed in some cancers.
