Description

UGT2B15 encodes a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzyme (EC 2.4.1.17) that catalyzes the glucuronidation of endogenous steroids (e.g., androgens, estrogens) and numerous xenobiotics. This phase II conjugation reaction enhances the water solubility and elimination of substrates. The enzyme is primarily expressed in the liver, prostate, and other steroid-responsive tissues. Genetic polymorphisms in UGT2B15 influence enzyme activity and are associated with altered drug metabolism and cancer risk.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Prostate cancer Altered androgen glucuronidation may affect intraprostatic androgen levels and tumor progression. PMID: 10652368, 11574763

Protein Summary

UGT2B15 is a 530-amino-acid transmembrane protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum. It belongs to the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 2B subfamily and conjugates UDP-glucuronic acid to a variety of lipophilic substrates, including steroid hormones (e.g., dihydrotestosterone, androstane-3α,17β-diol) and drugs (e.g., oxazepam, lorazepam). The enzyme exhibits broad substrate specificity and is a key determinant of interindividual variability in drug clearance and hormone homeostasis.
