Description

UBE2C encodes a member of the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. The encoded protein is essential for the destruction of mitotic cyclins and cell cycle progression. It functions as the E2 enzyme for the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C), targeting substrates for degradation by the proteasome. Overexpression of UBE2C is frequently observed in various cancers and is associated with chromosomal instability and poor prognosis.

Protein Summary

UBE2C (UbcH10) is a 179-amino acid protein with a molecular weight of approximately 20 kDa. It contains a conserved ubiquitin-conjugating (UBC) domain and a catalytic cysteine residue (Cys114) required for thioester bond formation with ubiquitin. The protein interacts with the APC/C complex and is essential for ubiquitin chain elongation on substrates such as cyclin B and securin. Its expression is tightly regulated during the cell cycle, peaking in G2/M phase.
