Description
TMOD3 encodes tropomodulin 3, a member of the tropomodulin family of actin-capping proteins. It binds to the pointed ends of actin filaments, regulating actin filament length and dynamics. TMOD3 is widely expressed and plays roles in cell morphology, motility, and cytoskeletal organization. Altered expression has been implicated in cancer progression and metastasis.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Breast cancer | Overexpression of TMOD3 promotes cell migration and invasion via actin cytoskeleton remodeling | PMID: 25944712 |
| Hepatocellular carcinoma | Upregulation correlates with poor prognosis and enhanced metastatic potential | PMID: 28407145 |
| Colorectal cancer | TMOD3 knockdown reduces cell proliferation and invasion in vitro | PMID: 29393419 |

Protein Summary
Tropomodulin 3 is a 352-amino acid protein that caps the pointed ends of actin filaments, preventing elongation and depolymerization. It contains a tropomyosin-binding domain and an actin-binding domain. The protein is ubiquitously expressed and is involved in maintaining cytoskeletal integrity, cell shape, and motility. Dysregulation is linked to cancer metastasis.
