Description

TKTL1 encodes a thiamine-dependent enzyme that catalyzes key reactions in the non-oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway. It is involved in the conversion of sedoheptulose-7-phosphate and D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate to D-ribose-5-phosphate and D-xylulose-5-phosphate. Overexpression of TKTL1 is associated with enhanced glucose metabolism via the pentose phosphate pathway, contributing to nucleotide synthesis and NADPH production, which supports rapid cell proliferation in cancer.
