Aliases TBCA, tubulin-specific chaperone A, cofactor A

Description

TBCA encodes tubulin folding cofactor A, a chaperone protein involved in the post-translational folding of alpha- and beta-tubulin. It binds to beta-tubulin intermediates and facilitates their incorporation into microtubules. TBCA is part of the tubulin folding pathway that includes cofactors B–E and is essential for proper microtubule dynamics and cellular structure.

Protein Summary

TBCA is a 108-amino-acid protein (12.4 kDa) that acts as a cofactor in the tubulin folding pathway. It specifically binds to beta-tubulin after release from the chaperonin CCT, preventing aggregation and promoting correct folding. TBCA then transfers beta-tubulin to cofactor D for dimerization with alpha-tubulin. The protein is ubiquitously expressed with highest levels in testis and brain.
