Description

TAS2R7 encodes a member of the TAS2R family of bitter taste receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) expressed primarily in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate. This receptor mediates the perception of bitterness in response to various natural and synthetic bitter compounds. TAS2R7 is also expressed in extraoral tissues, suggesting roles beyond taste, such as in chemosensation in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.

Protein Summary

TAS2R7 is a 299-amino acid integral membrane protein belonging to the TAS2R family of bitter taste receptors. It contains seven transmembrane domains characteristic of GPCRs. The protein is activated by bitter compounds such as denatonium and quinine, leading to intracellular signaling via gustducin and downstream calcium mobilization. Structural polymorphisms may influence individual differences in bitter taste sensitivity.
