Description

TAS2R20 encodes a member of the taste 2 receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). These receptors are expressed on the surface of taste receptor cells and mediate bitter taste perception. TAS2R20 is specifically activated by bitter compounds such as denatonium and quinine. The gene is located on chromosome 12p13.2 within a cluster of bitter taste receptor genes.

Protein Summary

TAS2R20 is a 299-amino acid GPCR with seven transmembrane domains. It functions as a bitter taste receptor, coupling to the G protein gustducin to activate downstream signaling. The protein is primarily expressed in taste receptor cells of the tongue, where it detects a range of bitter compounds. Polymorphisms in TAS2R20 contribute to interindividual differences in bitter taste sensitivity.
