Description

TACO1 encodes a mitochondrial protein that specifically activates translation of the mitochondrial-encoded cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1). It is required for proper assembly and function of mitochondrial complex IV (cytochrome c oxidase). Mutations in TACO1 cause mitochondrial complex IV deficiency, leading to Leigh syndrome and other mitochondrial disorders.

Disease Associations

Protein Summary

TACO1 is a 30 kDa mitochondrial matrix protein that specifically binds to the 5' untranslated region of COX1 mRNA to promote its translation. It is essential for the synthesis of COX1, a core subunit of cytochrome c oxidase. Loss of TACO1 function leads to complex IV deficiency and mitochondrial disease.
