Description
SSTR4 encodes somatostatin receptor 4, a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family that binds somatostatin and cortistatin. The receptor is involved in inhibition of adenylyl cyclase, modulation of ion channels, and regulation of cell proliferation. SSTR4 is expressed in brain, pancreas, and immune cells, and has been implicated in neuroendocrine signaling, pain modulation, and cancer biology.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Neuroendocrine tumors | SSTR4 overexpression may mediate antiproliferative effects via somatostatin analog binding; used in imaging and therapy | PMID: 25670057 |
| Alzheimer disease | Reduced SSTR4 expression in hippocampus may contribute to cognitive decline | PMID: 17984056 |
| Inflammatory pain | SSTR4 activation in sensory neurons reduces nociception in animal models | PMID: 22171089 |

Protein Summary
Somatostatin receptor 4 is a 388-amino acid integral membrane protein with seven transmembrane domains. It couples primarily to Gi/o proteins, inhibiting adenylyl cyclase and reducing cAMP levels. The receptor is a target for synthetic somatostatin analogs used in neuroendocrine tumor imaging and therapy.
