Description
SSTR3 encodes somatostatin receptor 3, a member of the somatostatin receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). The receptor is activated by somatostatin and cortistatin, inhibiting adenylyl cyclase and modulating intracellular calcium levels. SSTR3 is involved in neuroendocrine signaling, cell growth regulation, and apoptosis. It is expressed in brain, pancreas, and various tumors, making it a target for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in neuroendocrine tumors.

Protein Summary
Somatostatin receptor 3 (SSTR3) is a 418-amino acid integral membrane protein with seven transmembrane domains. It binds somatostatin-14 and somatostatin-28 with high affinity, leading to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase via Gi/o proteins. SSTR3 also activates phosphotyrosine phosphatase and modulates MAPK signaling. The receptor is internalized upon agonist binding and can localize to primary cilia in neurons. Its expression in tumors enables targeted imaging with radiolabeled somatostatin analogs.
