Description
The SRPRA gene encodes the alpha subunit of the signal recognition particle (SRP) receptor, a transmembrane protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The SRP receptor, together with the SRP, mediates the targeting of nascent secretory and membrane proteins to the ER membrane. The alpha subunit contains a GTPase domain essential for SRP binding and GTP-dependent protein translocation.

Protein Summary
The SRP receptor alpha subunit (SRPRA) is a 638-amino acid transmembrane protein with a cytosolic GTPase domain. It forms a heterodimer with the beta subunit (SRPRB) to constitute the functional SRP receptor. Upon binding of the SRP-ribosome-nascent chain complex, SRPRA undergoes GTP hydrolysis to release the ribosome to the ER translocon, facilitating cotranslational translocation.
