Description
The SRP9 gene encodes the 9 kDa subunit of the signal recognition particle (SRP). The SRP is a ribonucleoprotein complex that targets nascent secretory and membrane proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) for co-translational translocation. SRP9, together with SRP14, forms the Alu domain of the SRP, which is responsible for the elongation arrest function of the SRP. This function pauses translation until the ribosome-SRP complex docks with the SRP receptor on the ER membrane.

Protein Summary
SRP9 is a small, basic protein that forms a heterodimer with SRP14. This heterodimer binds to the 7SL RNA component of the SRP, forming the Alu domain. The Alu domain is essential for the elongation arrest activity of the SRP, which ensures that translation is paused until the ribosome-SRP complex is properly targeted to the ER membrane. SRP9 is ubiquitously expressed and is highly conserved across eukaryotes.
