Description
SOX15 (SRY-box transcription factor 15) is a member of the SOX (SRY-related HMG-box) family of transcription factors. It contains a high-mobility group (HMG) box DNA-binding domain and is involved in the regulation of embryonic development, cell fate determination, and spermatogenesis. SOX15 is expressed in multiple tissues, with highest levels in testis, and has been implicated in various cancers and developmental disorders.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Testicular germ cell tumors | SOX15 expression is altered in testicular germ cell tumors, potentially affecting differentiation pathways. | PubMed: 23434518 |
| Colorectal cancer | SOX15 acts as a tumor suppressor; promoter hypermethylation leads to silencing in colorectal cancer. | PubMed: 25652263 |
| Gastric cancer | Reduced SOX15 expression correlates with poor prognosis; may regulate cell proliferation. | PubMed: 27381352 |

Protein Summary
SOX15 is a 233-amino acid protein (UniProt O60248) with a single HMG box domain (residues 30-98) that binds DNA in a sequence-specific manner. It localizes to the nucleus and regulates target genes involved in cell cycle, differentiation, and development. Post-translational modifications include phosphorylation, which may modulate its activity.
