Description

SLC39A10 encodes ZIP10, a member of the Zrt/Irt-like protein (ZIP) family that mediates zinc uptake into cells from the extracellular space. Zinc is an essential trace element required for numerous cellular processes including enzyme function, transcription, and signal transduction. ZIP10 is localized to the plasma membrane and plays a role in zinc homeostasis, cell proliferation, and immune response. Dysregulation of SLC39A10 has been implicated in cancer progression and developmental disorders.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Breast cancer Overexpression of ZIP10 increases intracellular zinc, promoting cell proliferation and migration PMID: 25329317
Prostate cancer Altered zinc transport via ZIP10 contributes to malignant transformation PMID: 21804537
B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia ZIP10 expression correlates with poor prognosis and drug resistance PMID: 29127120

Protein Summary

ZIP10 (UniProt Q9BRX2) is a 10-transmembrane domain protein that functions as a zinc importer. It is expressed on the plasma membrane and facilitates zinc entry into cells, thereby regulating intracellular zinc levels. ZIP10 is involved in cell growth, survival, and immune cell function. Its expression is upregulated in several cancers and is associated with poor prognosis.
