Description

SLC2A6 (Solute Carrier Family 2 Member 6) encodes the facilitative glucose transporter GLUT6. This protein belongs to the major facilitator superfamily of glucose transporters and mediates the uptake of glucose and other hexoses across cellular membranes. GLUT6 is predominantly expressed in brain, spleen, and leukocytes, and its expression is regulated in response to metabolic demands. The gene is located on chromosome 9q34.2 and spans approximately 8.5 kb.

Protein Summary

GLUT6 is a 507-amino acid facilitative glucose transporter with 12 transmembrane domains. It shares ~40% sequence identity with GLUT1. The protein is N-glycosylated and localizes to the plasma membrane. GLUT6 has a low affinity for glucose (Km ~5 mM) and is inhibited by cytochalasin B. It may play a role in glucose sensing in the brain and immune cells.
