Description

SLC22A9 encodes the organic anion transporter 7 (OAT7), a member of the solute carrier family 22. OAT7 mediates the sodium-independent transport of organic anions such as estrone sulfate, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and sulfated steroids. It is primarily expressed in the liver and kidney and plays a role in the renal and hepatic clearance of endogenous and exogenous organic anions.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Primary hyperoxaluria type I Potential involvement in oxalate transport; limited evidence UniProt annotation; not confirmed in ClinVar
Chronic kidney disease Altered OAT7 expression may affect uremic toxin clearance NCBI GeneRIF; PMID: 21976557

Protein Summary

OAT7 is a 556-amino acid transmembrane protein with 12 predicted alpha-helical domains. It functions as an organic anion exchanger, coupling the uptake of sulfated steroids with the efflux of monocarboxylates such as lactate. OAT7 is localized to the basolateral membrane of hepatocytes and the apical membrane of renal proximal tubule cells.
