Description
The SELL gene encodes L-selectin (CD62L), a cell adhesion molecule expressed on the surface of most leukocytes. L-selectin mediates the initial tethering and rolling of leukocytes on endothelial cells, facilitating their migration into lymphoid tissues and sites of inflammation. It is a key receptor for addressing on high endothelial venules and plays a critical role in lymphocyte homing, neutrophil recruitment, and immune surveillance.

Protein Summary
L-selectin (CD62L) is a 372-amino acid transmembrane glycoprotein with an N-terminal C-type lectin domain, an EGF-like domain, two short consensus repeats (SCRs), a transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic tail. The lectin domain binds to sialyl Lewis X (sLeX) and related glycans on endothelial ligands such as GlyCAM-1, CD34, and MAdCAM-1. L-selectin is constitutively expressed on naive T cells, B cells, monocytes, and neutrophils, and is rapidly shed from the cell surface upon leukocyte activation via ADAM17-mediated proteolysis. Soluble L-selectin (sCD62L) is found in plasma and serves as a biomarker for immune activation and inflammation.
