Description

SDF2 (Stromal Cell-Derived Factor 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17q11.2. The encoded protein is a secreted factor that plays a role in the unfolded protein response (UPR) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. It is involved in protein quality control and may modulate cellular responses to ER stress. SDF2 is broadly expressed in many tissues and is implicated in various cancers and metabolic disorders.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 SDF2 expression is altered in pancreatic islets under ER stress, potentially affecting insulin secretion. PMID: 21880731
Colorectal Cancer SDF2 is upregulated in colorectal tumors and may contribute to tumor progression via ER stress modulation. PMID: 25605247
Breast Cancer SDF2 expression correlates with poor prognosis and may promote metastasis through UPR activation. PMID: 29187742

Protein Summary

The SDF2 protein is a 211-amino acid secreted factor with a signal peptide. It localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and extracellular space. SDF2 is induced by ER stress and interacts with components of the UPR, such as BiP/GRP78. It may function as a chaperone or signaling molecule to alleviate ER stress and maintain protein homeostasis. The protein is glycosylated and contains a conserved domain of unknown function (DUF).
