The SCT gene encodes secretin, a 27-amino acid peptide hormone primarily produced by S cells in the duodenum. Secretin regulates gastric acid secretion, pancreatic bicarbonate secretion, and water homeostasis. It is also expressed in the brain and acts as a neuropeptide. Protein Summary

Secretin is a 27-amino acid peptide hormone (UniProt P09683) synthesized as a preproprotein of 120 residues. After cleavage of the signal peptide and further processing, the mature secretin is secreted. It binds to the secretin receptor (SCTR), a G protein-coupled receptor, activating adenylate cyclase and increasing cAMP. Secretin stimulates pancreatic bicarbonate secretion, inhibits gastric acid secretion, and modulates water and electrolyte balance in the intestine. It also acts as a neuropeptide in the central nervous system.
