Description

SCG2 encodes secretogranin II, a member of the chromogranin/secretogranin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. It is involved in the packaging and sorting of peptide hormones and neurotransmitters into secretory vesicles. The protein is cleaved to produce bioactive peptides such as secretoneurin, which has chemotactic and angiogenic properties.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Neuroendocrine tumors Overexpression of SCG2 is associated with neuroendocrine differentiation; secretoneurin promotes tumor angiogenesis PMID: 12368274
Schizophrenia SCG2 polymorphisms have been linked to altered risk; secretoneurin may modulate neurotransmission PMID: 18382116
Cardiovascular disease Secretoneurin levels are elevated in heart failure and correlate with disease severity PMID: 22615329

Protein Summary

Secretogranin II is a 617-amino-acid acidic glycoprotein stored in large dense-core vesicles of neuroendocrine cells. It undergoes proteolytic processing to generate secretoneurin and other peptides. Secretoneurin acts as a chemokine for monocytes and endothelial cells, promoting angiogenesis and inflammation. The protein is widely used as a marker for neuroendocrine differentiation.
