Description

SCARA5 encodes a member of the scavenger receptor class A family. The protein functions as a ferritin receptor, mediating cellular uptake of iron-loaded ferritin. It is also implicated in innate immunity by binding bacterial lipopolysaccharide and in tumor suppression through regulation of cell adhesion and proliferation. SCARA5 is expressed in various tissues, with highest levels in the lung, liver, and testis.
