Description
RNASE10 encodes a member of the ribonuclease A superfamily. The encoded protein is a secreted ribonuclease with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is highly expressed in the male reproductive tract, particularly in the epididymis. It is thought to play a role in host defense and sperm maturation.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Male infertility | Altered expression or activity may impair sperm function and fertility | Low expression in epididymis associated with asthenozoospermia (PMID: 23555205) |
| Bacterial infections | Antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria | Direct bactericidal effect demonstrated in vitro (PMID: 23376485) |

Protein Summary
RNASE10 is a 25.5 kDa secreted ribonuclease belonging to the RNase A superfamily. It contains a signal peptide and a conserved catalytic domain with His-Lys-His motif. The protein exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is predominantly expressed in the epididymis, where it may contribute to sperm maturation and protection against urogenital pathogens.
