Description

RGS21 (Regulator of G Protein Signaling 21) is a protein-coding gene belonging to the RGS (Regulator of G Protein Signaling) family. RGS proteins act as GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) for G protein alpha subunits, accelerating the termination of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. RGS21 is specifically expressed in taste tissues and is involved in the modulation of bitter taste transduction. It is also expressed in other tissues and may play roles in immune and neuronal signaling.

Protein Summary

RGS21 is a 210-amino acid protein containing a conserved RGS domain. It functions as a GTPase-activating protein (GAP) for G protein alpha subunits, particularly Gαi and Gαq, thereby negatively regulating GPCR signaling. RGS21 is highly expressed in taste buds and modulates bitter taste perception. Its expression in other tissues suggests broader roles in signal transduction.
