Description
REM1 (RRAD and GEM Like GTPase 1) is a member of the RGK (Rad, Gem, Rem) subfamily of small GTPases. It functions as a negative regulator of voltage-gated calcium channels (CaV) by binding to the β-subunit, thereby modulating calcium influx and downstream signaling. REM1 is involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and cytoskeletal dynamics. Its expression is regulated in a tissue-specific manner and has been implicated in cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Protein Summary
REM1 encodes a 297-amino acid protein belonging to the RGK family of small GTPases. It contains a GTP-binding domain and a C-terminal calmodulin-binding domain. REM1 localizes to the plasma membrane and cytosol, where it interacts with the β-subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels (CaVβ) to inhibit channel activity. This regulation impacts calcium-dependent processes such as muscle contraction, hormone secretion, and gene expression. REM1 also binds calmodulin, linking calcium signaling to cellular responses.
