Description

REG3G (Regenerating Family Member 3 Gamma) encodes a secreted C-type lectin protein involved in antimicrobial defense, tissue regeneration, and inflammatory responses. It is highly expressed in the pancreas and small intestine, where it acts as a bactericidal agent against Gram-positive bacteria. REG3G is also implicated in pancreatic regeneration and is upregulated in pancreatitis and certain cancers.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Pancreatitis Upregulation of REG3G in acinar cells during acute pancreatitis; may promote regeneration or modulate inflammation. PMID: 21576517
Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Overexpression in tumor tissues; potential role in tumor progression and immune evasion. PMID: 25977331
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Increased expression in intestinal epithelium; antimicrobial activity against gut pathogens. PMID: 17008539

Protein Summary

REG3G is a 175-amino-acid secreted C-type lectin (UniProt Q6UW15) that forms homodimers and binds bacterial peptidoglycan. It exhibits bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria by disrupting cell wall synthesis. The protein is upregulated during pancreatic inflammation and is considered a biomarker for acute pancreatitis. Its expression is regulated by the NF-κB pathway and is induced by bacterial products.
