Description

REG3A encodes a C-type lectin protein that belongs to the regenerating gene family. It is secreted by pancreatic acinar cells and intestinal Paneth cells, functioning as an antimicrobial peptide and a growth factor involved in tissue regeneration, inflammation, and cell proliferation. REG3A is upregulated in pancreatitis and certain cancers, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Pancreatitis Upregulation of REG3A in acinar cells during acute pancreatitis; acts as a stress-induced survival factor PMID: 10861084
Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Overexpression promotes tumor cell proliferation and migration via STAT3 and MAPK pathways PMID: 25695633
Inflammatory Bowel Disease REG3A expressed in intestinal epithelium; antimicrobial activity against gut microbiota may modulate inflammation PMID: 17008549

Protein Summary

REG3A is a 175-amino acid secreted C-type lectin with a single carbohydrate recognition domain. It is synthesized as a preproprotein and processed to a mature form. The protein exhibits bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria and promotes cell growth and survival in pancreatic and intestinal epithelial cells. Its expression is induced by inflammatory stimuli and tissue injury.
