Description
REG3A encodes a C-type lectin protein that belongs to the regenerating gene family. It is secreted by pancreatic acinar cells and intestinal Paneth cells, functioning as an antimicrobial peptide and a growth factor involved in tissue regeneration, inflammation, and cell proliferation. REG3A is upregulated in pancreatitis and certain cancers, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Pancreatitis | Upregulation of REG3A in acinar cells during acute pancreatitis; acts as a stress-induced survival factor | PMID: 10861084 |
| Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma | Overexpression promotes tumor cell proliferation and migration via STAT3 and MAPK pathways | PMID: 25695633 |
| Inflammatory Bowel Disease | REG3A expressed in intestinal epithelium; antimicrobial activity against gut microbiota may modulate inflammation | PMID: 17008549 |

Protein Summary
REG3A is a 175-amino acid secreted C-type lectin with a single carbohydrate recognition domain. It is synthesized as a preproprotein and processed to a mature form. The protein exhibits bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria and promotes cell growth and survival in pancreatic and intestinal epithelial cells. Its expression is induced by inflammatory stimuli and tissue injury.
