Description
PRSS36 (serine protease 36) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16p11.2. It encodes a member of the type II transmembrane serine protease (TTSP) family, characterized by a transmembrane domain and a serine protease domain. The protein is involved in proteolytic processing of extracellular matrix components and activation of signaling pathways. PRSS36 is expressed in various tissues and has been implicated in cancer progression and other diseases.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer (various types) | Overexpression may promote tumor invasion and metastasis through ECM degradation and activation of protease-activated receptors. | Limited evidence from expression studies and in vitro assays; no large-scale clinical validation. |

Protein Summary
The PRSS36 protein (UniProt Q6UWY2) is a 548-amino-acid type II transmembrane serine protease. It contains a short cytoplasmic N-terminal domain, a transmembrane helix, a LDL receptor class A domain, a scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domain, and a C-terminal serine protease domain with the catalytic triad His-Asp-Ser. The protein is synthesized as a zymogen and activated by proteolytic cleavage. It is localized to the plasma membrane and can be shed into the extracellular space. Its proteolytic activity targets extracellular matrix components and may activate signaling cascades involved in cell migration and invasion.
