Description

PRDX5 (peroxiredoxin 5) encodes a member of the peroxiredoxin family of antioxidant enzymes. This protein reduces hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides, protecting cells against oxidative stress. It is localized to mitochondria, peroxisomes, and the cytosol. PRDX5 is involved in redox signaling, apoptosis regulation, and has been implicated in various cancers and neurodegenerative diseases.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Breast cancer Overexpression of PRDX5 may promote tumor cell survival by reducing oxidative stress-induced apoptosis. PMID: 21947058
Lung cancer PRDX5 upregulation correlates with poor prognosis and resistance to chemotherapy. PMID: 25695672
Alzheimer's disease PRDX5 is downregulated in affected brain regions, contributing to oxidative damage. PMID: 17267542
Atherosclerosis PRDX5 protects against oxidative modification of LDL and endothelial dysfunction. PMID: 18541561

Protein Summary

Peroxiredoxin 5 (PRDX5) is a 214-amino acid antioxidant enzyme with a molecular weight of approximately 22 kDa. It contains a conserved Cys-47 residue essential for peroxidase activity. PRDX5 reduces H2O2, organic hydroperoxides, and peroxynitrite, using thioredoxin as an electron donor. It is widely expressed and plays a role in protecting cells from oxidative damage, modulating apoptosis, and influencing cancer progression.
