Description
The PNOC gene encodes prepronociceptin, a precursor protein that is proteolytically processed to generate multiple neuropeptides, including nociceptin (also known as orphanin FQ), nocistatin, and other peptides. Nociceptin is the endogenous ligand for the nociceptin receptor (OPRL1), which modulates pain perception, stress responses, anxiety, and reward pathways. PNOC is expressed primarily in the central nervous system and plays a role in nociception, learning, and memory.

Protein Summary
Prepronociceptin (UniProt Q13519) is a 176-amino acid precursor protein that is cleaved to produce nociceptin (orphanin FQ), a 17-amino acid neuropeptide, along with other peptides such as nocistatin. Nociceptin binds specifically to the nociceptin receptor (OPRL1), a G-protein-coupled receptor, to modulate pain, anxiety, and reward. The protein is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system and is involved in synaptic transmission and neuroendocrine regulation.
