Description

PLAAT5 (Phospholipase A and Acyltransferase 5) encodes a member of the HRAS-like suppressor family. The protein exhibits both phospholipase A1/A2 and acyltransferase activities, catalyzing the hydrolysis and reacylation of phospholipids. It is involved in membrane phospholipid remodeling, lipid metabolism, and may play a role in adipocyte differentiation and tumor suppression. The gene is located on chromosome 11q12.3 and is expressed in multiple tissues.

Protein Summary

PLAAT5 is a 152-amino acid protein with a single transmembrane domain. It localizes to the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum. The protein catalyzes the hydrolysis of phospholipids at the sn-1 and sn-2 positions (phospholipase A1/A2) and also transfers acyl groups to lysophospholipids (acyltransferase). This dual activity is critical for membrane phospholipid homeostasis. Structural studies reveal a conserved catalytic triad (Ser-His-Asp) essential for enzymatic activity.
