Description
PLA2G4C encodes a member of the cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) family, specifically group IVC. This enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of membrane phospholipids to release arachidonic acid and lysophospholipids, precursors for eicosanoid signaling. Unlike other cPLA2 isoforms, PLA2G4C is calcium-independent and localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi. It plays roles in lipid mediator production, membrane remodeling, and cellular signaling.

Protein Summary
PLA2G4C encodes cytosolic phospholipase A2 gamma (cPLA2γ), a 541-amino acid protein with a molecular weight of ~61 kDa. It contains a C2 domain and a catalytic domain typical of group IV phospholipases. Unlike PLA2G4A, it does not require calcium for membrane translocation. The enzyme preferentially hydrolyzes phospholipids with arachidonic acid at the sn-2 position, contributing to eicosanoid biosynthesis. It is widely expressed, with highest levels in testis and skeletal muscle.
