Description

PLA2G4A encodes cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), which selectively hydrolyzes membrane phospholipids to release arachidonic acid, the precursor for prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and other eicosanoids. This enzyme is calcium-dependent and regulated by phosphorylation, playing a central role in inflammation, cell signaling, and lipid metabolism.

Protein Summary

The PLA2G4A protein (cPLA2) is a 749-amino acid cytosolic phospholipase that translocates to membranes upon calcium binding. It contains an N-terminal C2 domain for calcium-dependent membrane targeting and a C-terminal catalytic domain. The enzyme preferentially hydrolyzes phospholipids containing arachidonic acid at the sn-2 position, initiating the production of potent inflammatory mediators. Its activity is tightly regulated by phosphorylation at Ser505, Ser515, and Ser727.
