Description
PLA2G2F encodes a member of the secreted phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) family, group IIF. This enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of the sn-2 ester bond of glycerophospholipids, releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids. It is involved in lipid metabolism, eicosanoid production, and inflammatory responses. Expression is predominantly in testis, skin, and certain epithelial tissues. The protein has been implicated in cancer progression and inflammatory diseases.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Prostate Cancer | Overexpression of PLA2G2F promotes tumor growth and metastasis via arachidonic acid release and prostaglandin E2 synthesis. | PMID: 23431173 |
| Colorectal Cancer | Elevated PLA2G2F expression correlates with poor prognosis; contributes to inflammation-driven carcinogenesis. | PMID: 25670082 |
| Inflammatory Skin Disorders | PLA2G2F is upregulated in psoriatic skin lesions, contributing to local eicosanoid production and inflammation. | PMID: 20660018 |

Protein Summary
PLA2G2F is a 168-amino acid secreted phospholipase A2 enzyme with a conserved Ca2+-binding loop and catalytic His-Asp dyad. It preferentially hydrolyzes phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The protein is expressed in testis, skin, and prostate, and is implicated in cancer and inflammatory diseases. Its structure includes a signal peptide (residues 1-20) and a mature chain (21-168).
