Description

OVGP1 (Oviductal Glycoprotein 1) encodes a large, heavily glycosylated protein belonging to the mucin family. It is primarily expressed in the epithelial cells of the fallopian tube (oviduct) and is secreted into the lumen, where it binds to the zona pellucida of oocytes and spermatozoa. OVGP1 is thought to play a role in fertilization, early embryonic development, and immune modulation within the female reproductive tract. The protein is also known as mucin-9 (MUC9).

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Female infertility (non-obstructive) Reduced or absent OVGP1 expression may impair sperm-egg binding and fertilization Limited; case-control studies show lower OVGP1 levels in infertile women
Endometriosis Altered OVGP1 expression in ectopic endometrial tissue may affect tubal environment Observational; immunohistochemistry studies
Tubal ectopic pregnancy Dysregulated OVGP1 expression in fallopian tube may contribute to implantation outside uterus Case-control; gene expression analysis

Protein Summary

OVGP1 is a 684-amino-acid secreted mucin-like glycoprotein with a signal peptide, a large mucin domain rich in serine, threonine, and proline residues, and a C-terminal cysteine-rich domain. It is heavily O-glycosylated and N-glycosylated. The protein is synthesized by non-ciliated secretory cells of the fallopian tube epithelium and is released into the tubal fluid. OVGP1 binds to the zona pellucida of oocytes and to spermatozoa, facilitating sperm-egg recognition and fusion. It also exhibits immunomodulatory properties, potentially protecting gametes and embryos from maternal immune responses. Post-translational modifications are essential for its function.
