Description
OR5A1 encodes a member of the olfactory receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). These receptors are expressed in the cilia of olfactory sensory neurons and mediate the detection of odorants. The gene is part of a large multigene family on chromosome 11. OR5A1 is also reported to be expressed in non-olfactory tissues and certain cancer cell lines, suggesting potential extranasal functions.
