Description

ODAM (Odontogenic, Ameloblast-Associated) encodes a secreted protein that is primarily expressed in ameloblasts during tooth development. It is involved in enamel formation and mineralization. ODAM has also been implicated in tumor suppression, with reduced expression observed in several cancers, including breast and lung cancer. The protein may play a role in cell adhesion and extracellular matrix organization.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Ameloblastoma ODAM expression is altered in ameloblastoma, a benign odontogenic tumor, suggesting a role in tumorigenesis. PubMed: 20673889
Breast Cancer Reduced ODAM expression is associated with poor prognosis and may act as a tumor suppressor. PubMed: 23542377
Lung Cancer ODAM downregulation is observed in non-small cell lung cancer and correlates with metastasis. PubMed: 25242534

Protein Summary

The ODAM protein is a secreted, extracellular matrix-associated protein of 279 amino acids. It contains a signal peptide and is involved in enamel biomineralization. The protein is also implicated in cell adhesion and may function as a tumor suppressor in epithelial cancers. Its expression is largely restricted to odontogenic tissues and certain glandular epithelia.
