Description
OAZ2 encodes ornithine decarboxylase antizyme 2, a protein that negatively regulates polyamine biosynthesis by binding to ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and targeting it for ubiquitin-independent proteasomal degradation. It also inhibits polyamine uptake and is involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. Expression is induced by high polyamine levels via a unique ribosomal frameshifting mechanism.

Protein Summary
OAZ2 is a 228-amino acid protein (UniProt O95190) that functions as an antizyme, binding to ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) to inhibit its enzymatic activity and promote its degradation. It also inhibits polyamine transport. The protein is expressed in multiple tissues, with highest levels in testis. Its activity is regulated by polyamine-induced ribosomal frameshifting.
