Description

NUDT16 encodes a member of the nudix hydrolase family. The protein specifically hydrolyzes inosine diphosphate (IDP) to inosine monophosphate (IMP) and inorganic phosphate, and also functions as a decapping enzyme for RNA, removing the 5' cap from small nuclear RNAs and mRNAs. It plays a role in nucleotide metabolism and RNA turnover.

Protein Summary

NUDT16 is a 184-amino acid protein (20.5 kDa) belonging to the nudix hydrolase superfamily. It contains a conserved nudix box motif (GX5EX7REUXEEXGU, where U is a hydrophobic residue). The protein exists as a monomer and requires divalent metal ions (Mg2+ or Mn2+) for activity. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of IDP to IMP and also removes the 5' cap from RNA, contributing to RNA quality control.
