Description
The NPY2R gene encodes the neuropeptide Y receptor Y2, a G protein-coupled receptor that binds neuropeptide Y (NPY) and peptide YY (PYY). It is involved in the regulation of food intake, energy homeostasis, anxiety, and vasoconstriction. The receptor is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, mediating inhibitory effects on neurotransmitter release and appetite.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Obesity | NPY2R variants may alter receptor signaling affecting appetite regulation and energy balance. | ClinVar, OMIM |
| Anxiety Disorders | NPY2R polymorphisms are associated with altered stress response and anxiety-like behaviors. | NCBI Gene, OMIM |
| Hypertension | NPY2R-mediated vasoconstriction contributes to blood pressure regulation; variants may influence hypertension risk. | UniProt, OMIM |

Protein Summary
The NPY2R protein is a 381-amino acid G protein-coupled receptor with seven transmembrane domains. It is activated by NPY and PYY, leading to inhibition of adenylate cyclase and modulation of intracellular calcium levels. The receptor plays a key role in appetite suppression, anxiety reduction, and vascular tone regulation.
