Description

NFATC3 (nuclear factor of activated T-cells 3) encodes a member of the nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT) family of transcription factors. This protein plays a critical role in inducible gene expression during immune response, particularly in T-cells, and is involved in cardiac development, skeletal muscle growth, and neuronal function. It is regulated by calcium signaling and calcineurin-mediated dephosphorylation, which promotes its nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity.

Protein Summary

NFATC3 is a 1075-amino acid protein belonging to the NFAT family. It contains a conserved Rel homology domain (RHD) for DNA binding and a regulatory domain that interacts with calcineurin. Upon calcium signaling, calcineurin dephosphorylates NFATC3, exposing a nuclear localization signal and enabling translocation to the nucleus, where it regulates transcription of cytokines, growth factors, and other immune-related genes. The protein is expressed in multiple tissues, with highest levels in lymphoid organs and heart.
