Description
NEK4 (NIMA Related Kinase 4) encodes a serine/threonine protein kinase that belongs to the NEK family of kinases, which are homologous to the NIMA (never in mitosis A) kinase of Aspergillus nidulans. NEK4 plays roles in cell cycle progression, particularly at the G2/M checkpoint, and is involved in ciliary function and DNA damage response. It localizes to the centrosome and basal body, and its dysregulation has been implicated in primary ciliary dyskinesia and certain cancers.

Protein Summary
NEK4 is a 841-amino acid serine/threonine kinase with an N-terminal catalytic domain and a C-terminal regulatory region. It localizes to centrosomes and basal bodies, where it regulates microtubule organization and ciliary assembly. NEK4 also participates in the DNA damage response by interacting with ATM and ATR kinases. Its expression is highest in testis and lung, and it is conserved across eukaryotes.
