Description

NANOGP8 is a processed pseudogene derived from the NANOG homeobox gene. It is located on chromosome 15q14 and is transcribed in certain cancer cell lines and tissues. Although classified as a pseudogene, NANOGP8 retains an open reading frame and has been reported to encode a protein with functional similarity to NANOG in some contexts, particularly in cancer stem cell biology.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Breast Cancer Potential NANOGP8 expression may contribute to cancer stem cell maintenance and tumor progression Expression detected in breast cancer cell lines (e.g., MCF-7) via RT-PCR (NCBI Gene)
Colorectal Cancer NANOGP8 transcript may promote stemness and chemoresistance Upregulation observed in colorectal cancer tissues (COSMIC)
Prostate Cancer Possible role in androgen-independent growth Expression reported in prostate cancer cell lines (NCBI Gene)

Protein Summary

NANOGP8 is a pseudogene and does not encode a stable protein in normal physiology. However, some studies suggest that in certain cancer contexts, NANOGP8 mRNA may be translated into a protein with NANOG-like activity, but this is not confirmed by major databases (UniProt, NCBI).
